Cuffe backs calls for directly-elected mayor of Dublin
Mike Finnerty 19 Mar 2024Green MEP Ciáran Cuffe has backed calls for Dublin to have a directly-elected mayor.
Following confirmation that Limerick residents will be voting for their directly-elected mayor on the same day as local and European elections in June, Cuffe has called on Government to grant Dubliners the same powers as Limerick and indeed, most other European cities.
Speaking at a public meeting titled A Vision For Dublin, citizens had their say on their particular vision for Dublin going forward.
The refrain of Dublin having a directly-elected mayor as opposed to an unelected chief executive of Dublin City Council was heard at the meeting, which Cuffe supports.
“What is clear from all the contributions heard today is that we need a united voice for Dublin, an elected Mayor who will be responsible for weaving together the various threads that make a city a truly liveable place. It works in Paris, it works in Brussels and it can work here too. Limerick will soon have the opportunity to vote for a Directly Elected Mayor and Dublin should not have to wait much longer for the same opportunity,” Cuffe said.
“I will ensure that the valuable ideas and proposals gathered at the meeting will be reflected in the Green Party’s Dublin manifesto for the upcoming European and local elections. If re-elected I will work with my colleagues at national and local level to ensure that we make these great ideas a reality.”
