Dún Laoghaire Living Streets scheme gets the green light

Contentious plans for Dún Laoghaire town involving sustainable mobility and public realm improvements have been approved by councillors.

Following an 8 hour meeting that didn’t finish until the early hours of this morning,  members of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council voted by 30 votes to 7 to approve the ‘Living Streets’ scheme.

They agreed to approve the plan subject to several amendments and that traffic restrictions and pedestrian zones be monitored by the council’s Dún Laoghaire Area Committee.

The controversial plan has pitted residents against each other due to proposed new modal filters to block through traffic on Tivoli Road; Cross Avenue and Clarinda Park West

As well as this, parts of George’s Street Lower, Sussex Street and Convent Road will be pedestrianised.

DLRCC say the ‘Living Streets’ scheme would create a safer walking environment through reduced traffic, footpaths would be widened and there would be more facilities for cyclists and additional tree planting and seating areas.

More than 7,000 submissions were made as part of a public consultation on the changes and the council said it was “evident that the majority of submissions support the scheme as proposed”.
