Food delivery riders to stage Valentine’s Day strike
Mike Finnerty 14 Feb 2024Food delivery riders from UberEats and Just Eat will be staging a strike on Valentine’s Day.
Delivery drivers are planning on gathering at the Spire on O’Connell Street between 5pm and 10pm in protest of poor pay.
The English Language Students’ Union of Ireland (ELSU), which represents English language students in Ireland, said that delivery workers have to “work longer and longer hours to survive economically”.
The ELSU said that drivers are “exposing themselves to more danger and spending less time studying and improving the language most of them came here to learn”.
In a statement to TheJournal.ie, a spokesperson from Just East said that the “issue has not been brought to the attention of Just Eat Ireland, through our courier or restaurant network, however we take the concerns of all couriers extremely seriously,”
JustEat saw profits just shy of €15 million for 2021 in Ireland, while global profit for UberEats reached $10.9 billion in 2022.
