Man killed in explosion at homeless hostel

A man was killed in an explosion at a homeless shelter in Dublin city centre on Thursday afternoon.

The explosion happened at De Paul Supported Temporary Accommodation centre on Little Britain Street at around 3pm on Thursday.

An adult male aged in his 30s sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The explosion was confined to one room within the property, and no one else was injured.

Residents at the premises were evacuated, and a cordon, along with local traffic diversions, remain in place.

The precise cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, and the Garda Technical Bureau have commenced a forensic and technical examination with assistance from Army EOD.

The hostel, located on Little Britain St, in Dublin, is just off Capel Street and is operated by the DePaul charity.

A resident told The Journal that a wall, separating the women’s and men’s sections, was damaged in the explosion.

A Garda spokesman said “the precise cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, and the Garda Technical Bureau will examine the scene.”

The Garda Technical Bureau has commenced a forensic and technical examination with assistance from Army EOD.
