Sinn Féin says it has pledged €.5m to assist in the remunicipilisation of domestic waste collection service in Dublin City Council.

Commenting following their decision, Dublin Sinn Féin Cllr. Daithí Doolan, chair of Dublin City Council’s remunicipilisation sub group, said:

“I am delighted to confirm that Sinn Féin has pledged €.5m to assist in the remunicipilisation of domestic waste collection service by Dublin City Council.

“This pledge is contained in our alternative budget.

“The funding will continue until the domestic bin service in taken back into public ownership.

“It will assist in the development of a modern day, publically owned model that meets the needs of the city’s households.

“This shows a clear commitment by Sinn Féin to taking the capital’s waste collection service back into public ownership.

“The bin collection service was privatised in 2012 and has led to Dublin becoming Europe’s wild west of waste collection services.  Dublin is unique.

“There are up to 13 different companies collecting domestic waste in Dublin.

“This does not happen anywhere else in Europe.

“In other similar cities there is one company providing this service under control of the local authority.

“Taking the domestic bin collection back under council ownership will benefit households and the environment.

“Removing the drive for profit, it will put money back in the pockets of the public.

“Having one comprehensive service provider will reduce traffic on our roads.

“It will also ensure the service can be improved and modernised to meet the needs of a 21st century European capital city.

“This pledge of funding will add to the growing momentum to the campaign to take the bin service back into public ownership.”
