Business owners and residents reminded not to leave out bonfire material

Padraig Conlon 26 Sep 2023

With Halloween a month away Dublin City Council say they are calling on business owners and residents not to leave waste or material that can be used for building bonfires in sight, or in accessible locations.

The Council’s Waste Management Services division has already been removing material since late August.

In the 10 days leading up to Halloween, on call out of hours crews will be available North and Southside to assist Gardai and remove material.

2022 saw the second year in a row where tonnage collected, bonfires and reports all decreased.

Business owners and residents are reminded that you are responsible for your waste and if it is found not to have been disposed of correctly, you could be held liable.

The public is reminded that if you see waste being left out, being collected, or if you know of a stockpile, please ring Dublin City Council on 222 2222 or contact Citizen Hub on  www.citizenhub.dublincity.ie

Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) is not in a position to take reports or collect material.

However, by increasing awareness DFB hopes to reduce the number of injuries and incidents associated with bonfires and the misuse of fireworks.

The tragedy is that we are likely to see more injuries associated with the misuse of fireworks and these are so preventable.

If you find yourself at or near an unauthorised firework/bonfire event:

  1. Never consume drugs or alcohol when using fireworks
  2. Make sure children stand at a safe distance
  3. Keep everyone well back from the display/fire
  4. Never return to a lit firework. Wait 20 minutes and place in a bucket of water
  5. Never throw fireworks
