Dublin volunteers call on locals to support Children in Hospital

Dublin volunteers with Children in Hospital Ireland (CIH Ireland) are looking for locals to join them in supporting children in hospitals across Dublin.  

With almost 300 volunteers across 14 hospitals in Ireland, Children in Hospital Ireland creates play opportunities and eases the experience of hospitalisation for children and their families. 

CIH Ireland also provides information and advocates on behalf of all children and their families to ensure they have access to the resources and supports they need before, during and after hospitalisation.  

Karen Byrne, Play Volunteer at CHI at Crumlin said, “We would love to have more volunteers join our volunteer team. 

“Play creates a sense of fun and normalcy for a child during what is usually a very distressing time.

“We also give the parents a break, whether that is to go get a cup of tea, go home and shower, or even attend to other children.

“It is a simple service that makes such a difference.”

Children in Hospital Ireland are looking for volunteers to dedicate as little as 2 hours a week to play with children in the hospital. 

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as arts and crafts, story time, board games and more. 

CHI Ireland has play volunteer teams in CHI at Crumlin, Tallaght, Temple Street, Connolly and the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoighre. 

Volunteer Coordinator at Children in Hospital Ireland, Jessica Hurley said “Our volunteers play a huge role in making hospital a happier place for children.

“They are truly at the heart of our organisation and we are delighted to be growing our volunteer team in Sligo. 

“We will be recruiting volunteers across the country and welcome those from all walks of life to join us.” 

CIH Ireland are hosting information evenings on October 2^nd and October 5^th for those interested.
