Dublin City Councillors have condemned the actions of  right-wing groups who have sought the removal of books of which they do not approve from county libraries.

City Libraries management confirmed that no publications have been removed.

The motion was proposed by Sinn Féin Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha who said: “Fringe right-wing groups have targeted libraries seeking the removal of books that they do not approve of. They have visited libraries in the City and in Fingal they protested at the Swords library.

“Our libraries are places where freedom of information and freedom of speech are highly valued. I welcome the confirmation from our City Libraries management that no publications have been removed. The libraries and their staff have our full support.”

The motion, which was passed at a recent DCC Arts, Culture, Leisure and Recreation SPC said: “This SPC deplores the actions of groups who have targeted Dublin City Libraries and have sought to put pressure on staff and the library service generally not to stock books which do not meet these groups’ approval.

“We reject such attempts at censorship and we extend our full support to library staff and Dublin City Libraries in its policy of inclusiveness and diversity in its range of books and other media”.
