Assisted Dying Committee: TD outlines frustration over delayed establishment of committee

People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny says he has written to the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD, outlining his frustration over the delay in establishing the Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying.

Deputy Kenny said that the government are delaying the establishment of the committee by, to date, failing to name their nominations for membership of the committee.

“It’s now two months since the Committee on Standing Orders and Dáil Reform recommended that the committee should proceed,” Deputy Kenny said.

“In that time period the only announcement has been that Michael Healy Rea TD will chair the committee.

“What is delaying and frustrating the establishment of the committee is the failure of the government to nominate their representatives on the committee.

“I have written to the Ceann asking him to use his position to expedite this matter and get the committee up and running.

“There is very important work for this committee to do. It is imperative that Ireland begins the debate and discussion around voluntary assisted dying.

“This debate cannot be held up any longer.

“The government must stop the delays and make their nominations for the committee.”
