Revenue officers have been granted a three-month cash detention order by Judge Treasa Kelly.

This followed the seizure of $274,000 (the equivalent of €252,000) on Saturday morning at Dublin Port.

The cash was discovered as a result of routine profiling by Revenue officers, and with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner.

In a statement, a Revenue spokesperson said: “A van that had travelled from Holyhead to Dublin Port, was stopped and searched, resulting in the find.

“The cash was discovered in the door panels of the vehicle.

“Two men in their 30s were arrested by An Garda Síochána and were taken to Store Street Garda Station for questioning.

“It is suspected that the cash is the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity and is detained by Revenue in accordance with proceeds of crime legislation.”

Investigations are ongoing.

This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity. If businesses, or members of the public have any information, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295.
