Tathony House tenants to rally outside the sitting of Dublin City Council taking place in City Hall Dame St on this evening at 5.30pm

The tenants of Tathony House in Dublin 8, still facing mass eviction of 35 flats, say they are going to rally outside the sitting of Dublin City Council taking place in City Hall Dame St this evening at 5.30pm.

Tenants had a meeting with council managers as to the options, if any, available to tenants but there is still no clarity for tenants who face a Christmas of stress and sleeplessness in fear for the New Year.

The tenants of Tathony House are community workers, hospital workers, security guards – the people who work in the city.

But face potential homelessness in 2023 unless the government or local authority help them.

Tenants are calling for the council to work with an Approved Housing Body to purchase the block and keep people in their homes.

Community worker James O’Toole said:

“With rents rising by 14% over the last year I dread to think what the situation will be like in the New Year.

“I’m really worried I just won’t be able to find anything I can afford at all and even if I do there will be massive queues.

“The council really need to help us.”

Cllr Madeleine Johansson, also a tenant, said:

“We will keep protesting until the government or local authorities take action.

“We can’t have a situation where 35 families are added to already overburdened emergency accommodation.

“The council are saying they can’t act because not all families are on the housing list, but they can work with an Approved Housing Body and use Cost Rental options for other workers.”
