Labour spokesperson calls for clarity on 2023 Junior Cert results

The 2023 Junior Certificate students need to be reassured that the results will be delivered on time, says Labour education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD

Deputy Ó Ríordáin was speaking after the 2022 results were released to students today.

“I want to congratulate all students receiving results this morning,” he said.

“The class of 2022 faced unprecedented challenges starting school and studying during Covid restrictions.

“They are a credit to themselves for the hard work they’ve put in and they are due some well earned celebrations today.”

Deputy Ó Ríordáin said that next year’s students should not have to face the same delays in receiving their results.

“It is regrettable that the delivery of results was so delayed this year,” he said.

“Due to the delays and lack of clarity emanating from the Department, in September, Labour leader Ivana Bacik questioned the Taoiseach as to the expected date of the results. He was unable to answer.

“Students, families and schools can’t be expected to put up with such a delay in results again.

“The Minister must commit today to a date for results for next year’s students.

“It is only fair. Junior Cert results are extraordinarily important for students choosing subjects, universities and further education.

“For many early-school leavers, the Junior Certificate might be the only qualification they will get.

“Delayed results mean delayed decisions for people around continuing in education or commencing on the career paths like apprenticeships. It’s deeply unfair and disrespectful.

“Students who worked hard over the course of a three-year period deserve to have this work recognised by the timely delivery of their results.”
