Cut to Local Property Tax proposed at city council meeting

Sinn Féin councillors will propose a 15 percent cut to Dublin City Council’s local property tax at tonight’s City Council meeting.

Councillor Daithí Doolan said that the proposed cut is a stepping stone to completely removing the tax.

“Sinn Féin are committed to abolishing the Local Property Tax.

“It is a regressive tax with no ability to pay clause,” he said.

“The millionaire pays the same as the pensioner.

“But until we are in a position to bin this tax our councillors will continue to cut the tax by the maximum of 15 percent.

“This year in particular households needs every financial assistance possible.

“The cost of living crisis is punishing low income families and a cut in the house hold tax will put money back in people’s pockets.

“The household tax is not fit for purpose. It needs to be replaced by a progressive tax that adequately funds local authorities and the services we provide.”
