Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon marks 40 years

Over 20,000 women took to the streets of Dublin on Sunday to take part in the 2022 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon. 

The event, which celebrated its 40^th year, was the first to take place physically since 2019.

Since its inception, the event has raised over €226 million for over 700 charities in Ireland and today a special group of women who were taking part for their 40th year kicked off the race from the front of the start line.

The 2022 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon was won by Aoife Kilgallon from Sligo A.C. in a time of 33:07.

Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill from Donore Harriers was second across the finish line in 33:07 , and her sister Ide Nic Dhomhnaill from Donore Harriers placed third in 33:26.

Shauna Bocquet from Craughwell, Galway won the Elite Wheelchair Category in a time of 28:29.

Niamh Delany from Laois won the Visually Impaired category in a time of 57:42.

Women from all over Ireland took part in the 40th anniversary of the event, with many participating to fundraise for their chosen charitable causes.

The event was a celebration of togetherness, as women reunited to enjoy this special day out with friends and family members.

The Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon is a truly inclusive event, bringing women of all ages and fitness levels together to run, jog or walk the 10k course.

David O’Leary, General Manager of the Women’s Mini Marathon said: “Congratulations to the thousands of women who took part in today’s Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon.

“We’re so excited that we were able to return to the streets of Dublin for our 40th event and were able to celebrate this special milestone with the women who continue to make the event the success it is.

“This event couldn’t happen without the support of the hundreds of volunteers who so generously give their time to help on the day, as well as the many community groups and charities who continue to support our event year after year.

“I would also like to thank our sponsors, and in particular our title sponsors Vhi, whose support is so important in making this event happen.”

Speaking at the event Amy Burke, Director, Group Human Resources at Vhi said:

“It is really exciting to see so many people back on the streets of Dublin, both participants and supporters, for the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon and so fitting that it is to celebrate its 40th year.

“We have had two very successful virtual events in 2020 and 2021 but nothing beats the feeling of people coming together in one place to achieve their goals and on behalf of Vhi I would like to congratulate all the walkers, joggers and runners on their achievements today.

“The atmosphere here today is electric.

“I would like to congratulate the Women’s Mini Marathon team on reaching their 40^th year, this is some feat as over this period women have raised €226 million for 700 charities.

“Our mission at Vhi is to help our customers live longer, stronger, healthier lives and this partnership really brings that to life.”

Title sponsors Vhi provided each participant with an exclusive VhiWMM Finisher T-shirt as they crossed the finish line and then participants were able to continue their celebrations in the new Reunion Squared area at Merrion Square.

This area featured entertainment from Vhi, Asics, Alpro and FULFIL, among others as well as cool down sessions and complimentary treatments provided by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP).

Preparations for the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon starts early in September each year, with a team dedicated to ensuring that they deliver a fun and memorable day out for all the participants.

They are assisted on the day by 900 stewards from various sports clubs and scouting groups.
