Get on your bike for ‘Bike Week 2022’

Padraig Conlon 12 May 2022

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland has today launched Dublin City Council’s ‘Bike Week 2022’.

‘Bike Week’ is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling and takes place from Saturday 14th May to Sunday 22nd May.

Cycling is one of the most sustainable forms of travel and a family friendly activity. As a transport option cycling has one of the lowest impacts on the planet and the environment, impacting positively on air and noise pollution.

Pictured at today’s launch are Darren Taaffe, Dublin City Sports and Wellbeing Partnership (DCSWP) Sports Officer, St John Of Gods Crumlin Service User Patricia Quinn and Lord Mayor Alison Gillliland.

Speaking about ‘Bike Week’, Lord Mayor of Dublin Alison Gilliland said:

“’Bike Week’ is a great opportunity to celebrate all things cycling in Dublin with an exciting programme of events taking place around the City.

“I am delighted to see ‘The Bike Hub Crumlin’ coming soon too, this innovative and impactful new initiative will make cycling more accessible for the community.”

Head of Technical Services at Dublin City Council’s Environment and Transportation Department, Brendan O’Brien said:

“It’s great to see so many fantastic events happening in local communities across the City for this year’s ‘Bike Week’.

“I encourage those already cycling, or those interested in discovering more about cycling, to get involved.

“Our annual ‘Pedalpalooza’ festival, taking place in Fairview Park, is an ideal opportunity to experience a host of free, family-friendly cycling activities.”

Dublin City Council supports and hosts a series of events to mark ‘Bike Week’, including:

Pedalpalooza is Dublin City Council’s flagship ‘Bike Week’ event. It’s a family-friendly bike festival, taking place in Fairview Park on Sunday 22nd May from 12 noon to 4pm.

The event will include bicycle obstacles course, children’s story telling, e-bike and cargo bike trials, cycle tours, children’s games, bike maintenance and much more.

‘Bike Week’ Community Grant Scheme

In the run up to ‘Bike Week’, Dublin City Council has provided funding to a number of community initiatives celebrating and promoting cycling in their local area.

These include community cycles, bike maintenance courses, cycle training for school children, cycle buses and trishaw tours for older adults.

More information on activities that DCC is supporting for ‘Bike Week’ is available at https://admin.dublincity.ie/residential/transportation/active-travel/bike-week-2022

‘The Bike Hub Crumlin’

‘The Bike Hub Crumlin’ is a new initiative coming soon to Eamonn Ceannt Park, Sundrive Road, following the success of ‘The Bike Hub Dun Laoghaire’.

‘The Bike Hub Crumlin’ is a partnership between Dublin City Council, The Bike Hub and Cycling Without Age, and will provide a host of exciting new services aimed at encouraging accessible, inclusive cycling for people of all ages and abilities.

The project will provide access to free-to-use accessible bikes for people with disabilities or mobility issues, an ‘Upcyclers’ project repairing old and unused bikes for donation to members of the community, as well as mechanic and safe cycling courses for young people and the wider public.
