Dublin City Council has given the green light for the development of 52 apartments for older people currently on the housing waiting list at Millwood Court, Tonlegee Road.

The project was approved after councillors voted unanimously in favour of the scheme at this month’s county council meeting.

Sinn Fein councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha said it is “good news for older people in need of housing and this is about building homes and communities”.

It is understood the development will consist of 52 one-bedroom homes.

“The new development at Millwood Court will see the delivery of 52 high standard one-bedroom apartments for older people.

“They will be in several blocks ranging from two to four storeys and will have a central communal courtyard for the use of residents,” Mac Donncha says.

“A community building, landscaping and adequate and accessible car and bicycle spaces will be provided.”

Mac Donncha says that the old Millwood Court complex was “no longer fit for purpose, with tiny, cramped bed-sit units.

“The new development will deliver more and better apartments,” he says.

“The City Council has agreed to ensure that the remaining concerns of local residents are met.

“The plan evolved since 2018 to address such concerns and it is important that there is close liaison with local residents in the demolition and construction phase, something City Council management has undertaken to do.

“This is all about building homes and building communities,” Mac Donncha says.

“We need to see more of this if we are to address the continuing housing crisis in our city.”
