Dublin City Council votes for Irish Unity referendum
Padraig Conlon 08 Mar 2022Dublin City Council last night adopted a motion in favour of the holding of an Irish Unity referendum.
Councillors also called for the setting up of a Citizens Assembly to prepare for a referendum.
The motion, which was proposed by Sinn Féin Councillor Daniel Céitinn, received cross-party support.
“Tonight’s vote reflects the growing public support for an Irish Unity referendum,” he said.
“The debate on what type of United Ireland we should build is live, especially among young people across this island.
“Dublin City Council’s vote tonight puts our capital to the fore in the debate on the new Ireland, including transformed health, education and other social services, and a vibrant all-Ireland economy.
“Equality must be central to this vision.
“All Councillors who spoke agreed on the need for a Citizens Assembly to prepare for Unity.
“The Irish government should now proceed to set up the Forum.”
