Balllyfermot to turn green to support victims’ families 

Ballyfermot is set to turn green tomorrow in a massive show of solidarity with the victims of last Thursday’s attack at the Ballyfermot Civic Centre.

Speaking ahead of the planned vigil, local Councillor Daithí Doolan said:

“The attack that took place last Thursday in Ballyfermot was ferocious in its level of violence.

“It was more like an ambush than an assault.

“It is very rare that a young girl is set upon in public by young men with weapons.

“This needs to be a wake-up call for everyone.

“This needs to be a turning point in how young people, in particular how young women, are viewed and treated.

“Our streets must be safe for our young people who must feel safe to walk our streets, day and night. We cannot allow a very small group of individuals to hold our community to ransom. We will not allow this to happen. Our young people deserve better.

“The community in Ballyfermot has responded with an outpouring of support for the families.

“A network of youth services, community groups and elected representatives have organised a vigil for tomorrow, Saturday at the Ballyfermot Civic Centre. The support for the vigil has been inspiring and gives hope for the future.

“The event will give the public an opportunity to show their support for both victims and their families. But it will also send out a very clear message. Ballyfermot demands safer streets for our young people. The event will be positive, family friendly and will observe Covid guidelines.

“The family have asked people to wear something green at the vigil to show support for Alanna.

“So we want a sea of green in Ballyfermot tomorrow to show support and solidarity with the victims of last Thursday’s awful attack.”
