Garda to establish Domestic Violence Programme in Finglas next year
Gary Ibbotson 06 Dec 2021Independent Ballymun/Finglas councillor Noeleen Reilly has welcomed the news that Gardaí will be establishing the Domestic Violence Programme in Finglas.
Speaking after a question she raised at today’s Northwest Joint Policing meeting, Reilly said: “I am pleased to see the rollout of this programme into Finglas.
“We have seen two very tragic incidents in the area in the last year where two young women lost their lives.
“This has had a huge impact on the Community as it is unimaginable that two deaths could occur in the area in such a short period of time and in such close proximity to each other.”
She further added: “In Finglas we have seen Domestic Violence incidents rise by 38% in 2021 and Breach of Domestic Violence Orders also increase by 46%.
“There is no doubt that the lock down has been a trigger for this but the problem has been an issue in the area for quite some time
“Victims are unsure of what supports are out there for them and the reality is there just isn’t enough especially when it comes to Accommodation leaving many leaving in fear in their own home.
“I hope the start of this programme can assist men and women coming forward and seeking the support they need.
“It is expected to be in place mid-January 2022”.
