Sinn Féin councillor Daithi Doolan, leader of the Sinn Féin group on Dublin City Council, it is “appalling” that the council’s housing department is leasing property from British arms manufacturer BAE.

In a statement, councillor Doolan said: “It is appalling that taxpayers’ money is being used in this way to boost the coffers of a British arms manufacturer.

“It is shameful that the management of the City Council can proceed in this manner,” he said.

“Only on Monday last at a council budget meeting we in Sinn Féin questioned the proposed €27.1 million increase in 2022 for long-term leasing of housing by Dublin City Council, bringing next year’s spend to €73.8 million.

“Long-term leasing from private property speculators is a grossly wasteful and inefficient way of delivering social housing.

“And as today’s news shows, it also raises major ethical issues in some of the companies that the Council is facilitating to profit from property in this city.

“I will be raising this issue at the Housing Committee and at the full City Council.”
