Luas Finglas plans take step forward following consultation

Plans to bring the Luas to Finglas have taken a step forward after Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) announced it will be undertaking investigation works to help inform the final design in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes after the government body said it was considering changes to the plans after the first phase of public consultations.

Local Fianna Fail TD Paul McAuliffe said that it is welcome news for the community.

“The preliminary design is well under way, with several changes being proposed following the previous public consultation feedback,” he said.

“TII are taking on board the specific issues which were raised and are attempting to address these issues as best we can.

“It is their intention to run a second round of public consultation later this year.”

Further environmental impact studies will also be undertaken in the coming weeks.

“Luas Finglas are required to assess the impact of the proposed Luas extension on the surrounding environment.

“Ground investigation is an important part of that assessment and will look at characteristics of the soil and rock along the proposed route, ground water levels, the presence of any soil and water contamination etc.”

It is understood that Ground Investigations Ireland has been contracted to carry out these works and is scheduled to begin this week.

It is estimated the works will take 15 weeks to complete and workers will be working on several sites throughout the area on Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

“There should be minimal impacts outside of the investigation sites, other than occasionally raised noise levels,” Deputy McAuliffe says.

“TII will hand deliver an information letter to residents near to the planned investigation sites before the works begin in a particular area.
