Lahart: An Post and Revenue must clarify non-EU parcel charges

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South West, John Lahart, is calling for An Post and Revenue to clarify communications on non-EU parcel delays and customs.

Deputy Lahart said that charges on non-EU originating parcels need to be clarified.

“An Post and Revenue need to be clearer in their communications on the recent changes to non-EU parcels as many parcels are either not arriving or the receiver is being charged customs.

“The problem is there are people expecting family gifts from relatives and friends who are either sending from the UK or from non-EU countries and the parcel doesn’t arrive and they have no idea why.

“We’re left in a situation now where there are thousands of disappointed consumers as well as customer service agents who are dealing with frustrated customers and they are trying to explain to them why their parcel hasn’t arrived or why they are being charged customs,” he said.

Deputy Lahart said Revenue needs to ensure the public know about custom charges on items coming in from non-EU countries.

“An post also need to clarify why parcels have been delayed or returned to the sender.

“They need to inform the public that if the EU customs requirement for additional electronic documentation is incomplete by the sender the items are returned to the sender.

“On the ground frontline An Post staff are taking the brunt of the public’s wrath and frustrations – this needs to be rectified immediately.”
