Dublin City Council has announced that the pedestrianisation of two city centre streets is to end after this weekend.

In a statement released on Twitter the local authority said this weekend will be the final weekend for pedestrianisation of Capel Street and Parliament Street.

“Over the last 11 weeks, more than 300,000 people have experienced the traffic-free streets of Capel Street and Parliament Street,” the council said.

“This weekend is the final scheduled weekend so be sure to check it out.”

For the past 11 weeks the streets were made traffic-free on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for a trial period over the summer to facilitate outdoor dining.

A public consultation at the start of this year showed overwhelming support for traffic reduction on Capel Street with 85% of the 4,500 responders in favour of pedestrianisation.
