Revenue officers seize €5m of illegal cigarettes at Dublin Port
Gary Ibbotson 06 Aug 2021Over 7 million cigarettes, with an estimated retail value of approximately €5 million, were seized at Dublin Port by Revenue officers yesterday.
On Thursday, the authorities discovered the illegal cigarettes with the assistance of a mobile x-ray scanner in a container that had arrived into Dublin Port from Rotterdam.
The seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
Earlier in the day, Revenue also seized over €100,000-worth of illegal drugs at the Dublin Mail Centre.
The narcotics were found during a routine operation with the assistance of detector dog, Bailey.
Over six kilograms of various types of drugs were seized, including herbal cannabis, cannabis resin, ketamine and butane honey oil, and 180 Diazepam tablets.
The parcels were labelled as items such as “documents”, “gifts”, “sports equipment”, “clothes” and “dog toys”.
Investigations into both seizures are ongoing.
