Tobacco and cigarettes with an estimated retail value of €7.3 million have been seized at Dublin Port.

This follows on from a seizure yesterday at the port, where 10 million cigarettes were found in a shipping container arriving in from the Netherlands, which emanated in Asia.

Today’s find was a result of “routine profiling,” says Revenue as well as the use of a mobile x-ray scanner.

The shipment, which originated in Bulgaria, has an estimated retail value of €7.3 million – which would have represented a €5.8 million loss for the Exchequer.

This seizure of part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

Businesses or members of the public who have any information regarding smuggling can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
