Remembering the victims of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings

Remembering today the thirty three people who were killed and the hundreds who were seriously injured in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 17 May 1974, which saw the largest loss of life on a single day in the Troubles.

Four bombs exploded on the evening of May 17, 1974, three in Dublin City and one at a pub in Monaghan.

The attacks were coordinated in the middle of the evening rush hour.

The first went off at 17.28 on Parnell Street, followed by Talbot Street and South Leinster Street at two-minute intervals.

Around 90 minutes later the fourth bomb exploded at a pub in Monaghan.

47 years on the files held by the British government on the bombings remain under lock-and-key becasue of “national security” claims by the UK government.

Patrick Askin (44): Glaslough, Monaghan Killed in Monaghan bomb.

Josie Bradley (21): Coolfin, Kilcormack, Co Offaly. Killed in Talbot Street.

Marie Butler (21): Villierstown, Cappoquin, Co Waterford. Killed in Parnell Street.

Anne Byrne (35):Donaghmede, Dublin. Killed in Talbot Street.

Thomas Campbell (52): Killed in Monaghan.

Simone Chetrit (30): A French citizen, killed in Talbot Street.

Thomas Croarkin (36): Seriously injured in Monaghan and survived until July 24th, 1974, when he died in the Richmond Hospital.

John Dargle (80): Ballybough, killed in the Parnell Street bombing.

Concepta Dempsey (65): Drogheda, seriously injured in Talbot Street and survived until June 11th when she died in the Mater hospital.

Collette and Baby Doherty (21): Dublin, was nine months pregnant when she was killed in Talbot Street.

Patrick Fay (47): Artane, killed in Parnell Street.

Elizabeth Fitzgerald (59): Phibsboro, injured in the Talbot Street bombing, survived until May 19th, 1974.

Breda Grace (35): Portmarnock, originally from Tralee, Co Kerry, killed in Talbot Street.

Archie Harper (73):  Injured in the Monaghan bombing and died on the following Tuesday night, May 21st.

Antonio Magliocco (37): Italian citizen, killed in Parnell Street.

May McKenna (55): Originally from Monaghan and Dungannon, Co Tyrone, lived in Talbot Street (over O’Neill’s Shoe Shop), was killed in Talbot Street explosion.

Anne Marren (20) Originally from Ballymote, Co Sligo, killed in the Talbot Street explosion.

Anna Massey (21): Sallynoggin, killed in the South Leinster Street explosion.

Dorothy Morris (57): Kimmage, killed in the Talbot Street explosion.

O’Brien Family – John O’Brien (24), Anna O’Brien (22), Jacqueline (17 months) andAnne- 5 months): Lived in Gardiner Street, originally from Finglas, entire family killed in Parnell Street explosion.

Christina O’Loughlin (51): Townsend Street, killed in the South Leinster Street explosion.

Edward John O’Neill (39): Dominick Street, killed in the Parnell Street.

Baby Martha O’Neill (still-born): Stillborn child of Edward and Martha O’Neill, born in August 1974.

Marie Phelan (20): Originally from Waterford and living in Dublin killed in Talbot Street.

Siobhán Roice (19): Originally from Wexford town and living in Dublin, killed in Talbot Street.

Maureen Shields (46): Originally from Tipperary, killed in Talbot Street.

Jack Travers (28): Monaghan town, killed in the explosion in North Street, Monaghan.

Breda Turner: Originally from Thurles, Tipperary, living in Dublin, killed in Parnell Street.

John Walshe (27): Crumlin, killed in the Talbot Street explosion.

Peggy White (45): Monaghan town, injured in the bomb in North Road, Monaghan, and died on the night of the bombing.

George Williamson (72):Castleshane, Co Monaghan, killed in the explosion in North Road, Monaghan.
