Trial of new traffic arrangements for Merrion Row, Hume Street, Ely Place and St Stephens Green East

Padraig Conlon 14 May 2021

Dublin City Council are reminding the public that it is to trial new traffic arrangements for Merrion Row, Hume Street, Ely Place and St Stephens Green East this weekend.

The new arrangements are being trialled to facilitate outdoor dining and provide additional space for people coming back into the City, as part of a wider programme led by the Office of City Recovery.

The decision to proceed with the trial was made following a recent public consultation that received almost 2,400 submissions, with 93% respondents in favour.

The trial will take place from 6am on Saturday May 15th until 11pm on Sunday May 16th.

Under the new trial arrangements there will be one lane of traffic on Merrion Row serving traffic from Kildare St, while traffic from St Stephen’s Green East will be diverted via Hume St and Ely Place where the direction of the traffic will be reversed.

Traffic from Merrion Square seeking to head into the Stephen’s Green area and carparks will be diverted via Pembroke Street and Leeson Street

Redirected bus route information is available on the Dublin Bus website.

If the trial is successful a design can then be finalised in the coming weeks which would allow for accessible footpath extensions on both sides of Merrion Row to facilitate outdoor dining this summer.

A full traffic management plan will be in place for the trial weekend.
