National Library announce major year-long programme of LGBTI+ events

The history of LGBTI+ experience and identity in Ireland is to be explored in a new year-long programme from the National Library of Ireland.

‘Living with Pride’ will include an exhibition of the work of activist Christopher Robson, as well as a year-long programme of LGBTI+ online events.

These online events have been co-curated with the National Library by Tonie Walsh, veteran LGBTI+ rights activist, journalist and founder of the Irish Queer Archive.

Director of the Library, Dr Sandra Collins said:

“The National Library of Ireland is committed to telling the story of Ireland in all its rich diversity.

“This includes historically lesser-told and marginalised narratives, like that of Ireland’s LGBTI+ community.

“Living with Pride is a major initiative for the Library, and will comprise virtual talks, readings, workshops, panel discussions and events for children and young people, and an in-person and virtual exhibition.

“It is a demonstration of our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”

Living with Pride will hinge on the Library’s Christopher Robson Photographic Collection, which documents LGBTI+ life and activism in Ireland.

The collection will be the subject of a dedicated virtual and physical photographic exhibition, launching in the summer at the NLI’s National Photographic Archive, Temple Bar.

The exhibition will focus specifically on Christopher Robson’s photography, life, work and achievements, while the accompanying events programme facilitates a closer look of many of the themes and issues raised by the photographs.
