Ó Ríordáin blasts Department of Education over schools reopening

Northside TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has criticised the “failure of the Department of Education” to issue guidance to schools reopening next Thursday.

Deputy Ó Ríordáin, who is Labour education spokesperson, said the “ongoing failure to communicate effectively” with those in the education sector continues to create challenges for students, parents and teachers alike.

“We welcomed the news that schools would reopen for children with special education needs.

“These children must be a priority for Government as they seek to gradually return all students to in-class tuition,” he said.

“However, schools and teachers can’t be expected to open without adequate guidance and time to prepare.

“They can’t just turn the lights on next week and hope for the best.

“The Department had promised that guidance would be circulated yesterday.

“Here we are a day later, and still nothing has been received.

“This is another symptom of the shocking lack of respect the Department has for our crucial special needs education teachers who continue to do extraordinary work in very challenging circumstances.

“I’m urging the Minister to issue guidance as soon as possible.

“Already a day late, the Government continues to let down teachers, parents, students and all those involved in the education sector.

“It’s not good enough. Schools need clarity in order to safely reopen next Thursday.”
