Dublin North West TD Paul McAuliffe has welcomed legislation that will see implement an elected mayor for Limerick City and County with executive functions but is calling for a similar role to be introduced in Dublin sooner rather than later.

Deputy McAuliffe, who is the Fianna Fail spokesperson for Local Government said: “This week’s announcement increases powers to Local Government, changing the role of a Mayor from having a ceremonial function to having more significant powers.

“It enables the people of Limerick to have more of a say in how their county functions as is common practice in many cities throughout Europe.

“However, the timeline for similar changes in Dublin must be more ambitious so that the new Dublin Mayor is ready to take up office in June 2024.

“Dublin’s directly elected mayor needs to have executive functions, currently held by the local authorities Chief Executive, around housing, road transport and safety, strategic development and environmental services.

“They also need to be a broker with national government and respond to the issues which are pressing in their area.

“This was a clear commitment in the Programme for Government which has now been achieved for Limerick and I look forward to working with the Minister to allow citizens of Dublin enjoy the same benefits of a strong local democracy,” he said.
