THE release of homeless figures from the Department of Housing have revealed that a total of 8,656 people accessed emergency accommodation in the month of September.

The figures show decrease of 28 people when compared with the previous months total.

Octobers figures revealed there was a total of 6,073 adults and 2,583 children homeless in Ireland. They also revealed a total of 1,128 families were homeless in Ireland.

Depaul CEO David Carroll commented on the figures.

“We welcome a decrease in the numbers of those experiencing homelessness,” he said.

“To see the figures drop is very heartening given the vulnerabilities faced by everybody at this time. The Covid pandemic has shown in the very realist way the importance of safe and secure housing.

“I am happy with the reintroduction of the eviction ban as part of level 5 restrictions as this measure helped to reduce the numbers of those experiencing homelessness in the initial stages of the Covid pandemic and prevent further homelessness.”

The charity has revealed that during the Covid period (March to August) they supported 1,759 adults and 530 children. They also supported over 250 people to exit Direct Provision living in the same period, including 140 adults and 116 children and 55 families.
