A man who received a package of €72,000 worth of cannabis from the USA has been jailed.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Eoin Greene (32), of Dunedin Terrace, Monkstown Farm, Dun Laoghaire, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of drugs for sale or supply at the above address on November 4, 2025.

The court heard that the parcel arrived at Dublin Airport and customs intercepted it, then contacting the gardaí. An operation was put in place, and a controlled delivery of the drugs took place.

Gardaí obtained a search warrant, and when Greene took possession of the drugs, gardaí approached the house and carried out a search, where they found cocaine valued at just over €14,000. A total of €86,290 of drugs was seized from the house including €72,000 of cannabis and the cocaine along with a cocaine press.

The court heard that Greene took ownership of the drugs and made admissions at the scene to the gardai. Mobile phones were also seized. Gardai asked if Greene was expecting packages anymore, and he said, “I wouldn’t do it again; do you honestly think I’m that stupid?”

Greene has 60 previous convictions, which include convictions for drunk driving, road traffic matters, theft, criminal damage, threats to kill and assault.

Passing sentence, Judge Martin Nolan said: “It seems gardai and customs had information, and there was a controlled delivery of the drugs.” He noted that “these drugs were going to be sold.”

Judge Nolan said Greene had a drug habit and needed the money.

The judge said, “do I think he will offend to any degree in the future – the jury is out; but this court would not be optimistic, but people can change.”

Judge Nolan said, “There is a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years for this offence”. He noted that the court can mitigate from that. “I feel that Greene’s early guilty plea allows me to do so.”

Judge Nolan sentenced Greene to three years and nine months, backdated to February of this year when he went into custody on this matter.

An investigating garda agreed with Maurice Coffey SC, defending, that his client was cooperative and took ownership of the drugs at the scene; he also agreed that Greene had difficulties with drugs and that this was his first conviction for a drug-related offence.

Counsel said Greene has been a drug addict all his life and was taking 25 Xanax a day before he went into custody.

Mr Coffey said Greene is now drug-free while on remand and handed in clean urine analysis to the court, along with a letter from Greene and members of his family.

He asked Judge Nolan to consider ordering a probation report so that a sentence could be structured to give Greene some hope at the end of his sentence, to which the judge declined.

He asked the court to take into account his client’s early guilty plea, his cooperation and that he took ownership of both the cocaine and cannabis and that this mitigation could provide the court with certain leeway with regard to the mandatory minimum ten-year sentence.
