A man who was caught with over €18,000 of ketamine and €7000 cash in his apartment has been jailed for two and a half years.
Gardai carried out a search of Christopher Dooris’s home on July 27, 2022 after receiving confidential information about the presence of controlled drugs there.
A total of €18,084 of ketamine and over €7,200 cash were found during the search, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard.
Dooris was not present at the time of the search, but items including his passport were identified by gardai.
Garda Gillian Kirwin told Kieran Kelly BL, prosecuting, that Dooris was later arrested and nothing of evidential value was obtained when he was interviewed.
Dooris (38), of Leinster Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6 pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug for sale or supply.
He has 36 previous convictions including drugs, public order and road traffic offences.
Gda Kirwin agreed with Dominic McGinn SC, defending, that his client had a cocaine addiction at the time and is now getting drug counselling and support for his mental health issues.
Mr McGinn outlined to the court that his client has taken steps to deal with his addiction.
Dooris is in stable relationship and has five children. A number of documents and letters were handed to the court.
Mr McGinn noted that his client is not currently working due to his mental health issues. He asked the court to consider alternatives to imposing an immediate custodial sentence.
Sentencing Dooris today, Judge Pauline Codd noted it was an aggravating factor that Dooris had a previous conviction for possessing cocaine for sale or supply.
The court heard he was ordered to carry out community service in relation to this offence.
The judge set a headline sentence of six years, which she reduced to four years taking into account mitigation, including Dooris’s guilty plea and his efforts to rehabilitate.
She suspended the final 18 months of this sentence on a number of conditions.
