Chambers named as Fianna Fáil’s director of elections
Mike Finnerty 21 Oct 2024Tánaiste Micheál Martin has appointed Minister for Finance and Dublin West TD Jack Chambers as Fianna Fáil’s director of elections ahead of the upcoming general election.
Chambers is reprising his role from the local elections where Fianna Fáil became the biggest party at a local level in Ireland and held steadily in Dublin.
Chambers was rewarded with the high-profile Minister for Finance role in the summer following Micheal McGarth’s nomination as Ireland’s European commissioner.
Martin said “Jack demonstrated considerable organisational skills and leadership in the recent successful local elections for the party. He has the capacity to direct this national campaign for Fianna Fáil and will be travelling the length and breadth of the country.”
“In the forthcoming general election, Fianna Fáil will focus on addressing the future needs of the country, including the cost of living, housing, healthcare, creating safe and clean cities and towns, promoting sustainable climate policies, and ensuring a good quality of life for all.”
Chambers said, “we are very ambitious for the future, with strong tickets across the country.”
“Our focus remains on delivering meaningful change and ensuring we continue to represent the needs of communities nationwide. As we move toward the next chapter, we are committed to building a better future for all, addressing key challenges, continuing to build economy, support workers and businesses and growing prosperity.”
Chambers himself announced his re-election bid in August and has since drafted in a running mate in the form of Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart candidate Lorna Nolan.
Tbe precise date of the general election has become the subject of furious debate in the Irish political sphere in recent weeks, with Martin commenting before the weekend that he is open to the idea of a pre-Christmas election.
Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman told reporters on Friday that the country “needs clarity” on the election date.
