Delivery of a state-of-the-art community space in Baldoyle has moved a step closer following overwhelming support given for the new facility by Councillors at this week’s meeting of Fingal County Council.

The Baldoyle Community Centre will provide the coastal town with a diverse range of recreational, educational, and sporting options, along with the creation of a vibrant community space nestled within Racecourse Park. It will be strategically located to serve a wide catchment area, ensuring easy accessibility to all residents within a 10-minute walking radius.

It is poised to become a focal point for locals, undergoing a transformation into a cutting-edge facility boasting a sports hall, multiple community rooms, changing facilities, and landscape enhancements. The facility, which will be located on the site of the former ‘Coast’ Estate Marketing Suite Buildings in Racecourse Park, is being delivered to serve the existing and future population in this fast growing area. The proposal received positive feedback when it was put out for public consultation.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Adrian Henchy, said that the delivery of such a venue emphasised the significant benefits the new centre will bring to both residents and visitors alike. “This facility promises to make a significant impact by providing diverse programs and activities suitable for individuals of all ages and abilities. This high-quality and easily accessible centre will give residents of Baldoyle a great opportunity to engage in a wide range of physical, sporting, and wellbeing programs for years to come, ensuring a healthier and more active community for generations”, he said.

At its core, the Baldoyle Community Centre prioritises sustainability and accessibility, featuring a green roof and rain-garden to promote biodiversity and ecological value. Its circular design minimises visual disruption to the surrounding area, complemented by ample bike parking to encourage sustainable transportation modes, including electric and cargo bikes.

The central sports hall in the energy-efficient facility will accommodate three courts, with the complex itself also providing four versatile community rooms and externally accessible changing rooms, along with accessible parking and electric vehicle charging points.

Acting Director of Fingal’s Community Development Department, Paul Carroll, highlighted the significance of the facility saying: “Strategically positioned to serve a wide catchment area, the centre will help foster a strong, sustainable community through collaborative efforts and inclusive programming. It will also benefit from pedestrian-friendly walkways and bike paths that will promote active travel, while landscaped gardens will enhance the overall environment of the area.”

The Council expects work to begin at the site in Q3 this year, with an 18 month construction timeframe. Once completed, the Baldoyle Community Centre will become a key facility of the wider development of Racecourse Park which will create an attractive natural amenity area for residents and visitors.
