Yeats Sisters symposium coming to Dundrum
Dublin People 12 Jul 2024The annual Yeats Sisters Symposium will be held on Saturday 15th July, 2023 at Taney Parish Centre, Dundrum, County Dublin from 10pm to 5pm.
Susan and Elizabeth Yeats, fondly known within the family as ‘Lily & Lollie’, respectively, were notable artists, skilled craftspeople and courageous cultural and entrepreneurial innovators, who advanced the emancipation of women through training and education.
This 2024 symposium will feature a number of fascinating papers from leading academics and experts, including: Beatrice Kelly, Cultural Heritage expert and strategist; Dr. Róisín Kennedy, Assistant Professor, School of Art History and Cultural Policy, UCD; Dr Caoilfhionn Ní Bheacháin, Associate Professor in Communications, University of Limerick and Anne Brady, National Library of Ireland. We are particularly pleased to welcome Helen Elletson, Research Curator, from the William Morris Society, London.
These papers will examine the early working influences on the lives of Susan and Elizabeth Yeats: their engagement with William Morris and the principles (aesthetic-labour-enterprise) of the Arts & Crafts movement; explore the relationship with the pioneering, Evelyn Gleeson, who championed the Irish Arts & Crafts movement and examine the distinctive qualities and achievements of Ireland’s arts and crafts movement, and reflect on the design contribution of numerous visual artists who created distinctive pressmarks and devices for the sisters’ private art press.
Additionally, the symposium will hear from research exploring a range of primary sources that shape our understanding of Dun Emer Industries – the philosophy and practices of this cooperative association, and how it builds support and profile for the fledgling enterprise.
The Symposium will also host an introductory workshop for participants to experience ‘the art of stitch’, hosted by the Irish Guild of Embroiderers, as well as a Walking Tour, led by local historian, John Lennon, through Dundrum and Churchtown, highlighting the many places central to the lives of the Sisters and their work.
On Sunday 14th July, an introductory workshop to experience the craft of letterpress printing will be hosted for a limited number of participants at the National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Dublin.
