Here are the best films playing in Dublin May 24th-26th

Our weekly round-up of the best films playing in Dublin is serving some real treats this week.

On the Hollywood blockbuster front, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is this week’s big-swinging release and it goes without saying the film will blow you to the back of the cinema.

George Miller films don’t come along very often (and when they do, people will just say they’re busy like when Three Thousand Years Of Longing came out) so Furiosa isn’t to be missed.

Anya-Taylor Joy plays the character made famous by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max Fury Road and the film is an awe-inspiring bit of filmmaking, especially in IMAX.

Look out for the film in all good Dublin cinemas (although try to seek it out in IMAX).

On the older front, Trainspotting is returning to cinemas with a new 4K resolution.

Regardless if you saw the film back in 1996 or only know the film for the poster and iconic soundtrack, the film is always worth checking out on a big screen.

Trainspotting is a landmark film in modern culture; any chance to see it outside the confines of your home is not to be missed.

Look out for the film at the IFI and the Lighthouse.

Closer to home, the late, great Charlie Bird’s final story has been documented in the new film Ransom ’79.

The RTÉ journalist bravely battled with motor neurone disease in the later stages of his life, but illness never got in the way of his nose for a story.

The film follows Bird and documentary maker Colin Murphy as they look to lift the lid on one of the great stories in recent Irish history: a criminal gang attempted to extort the Irish government out of millions of pounds but the story has not been widely reported until now.

Part documentary and part thriller, the film is a fitting tribute to Bird.

Both the IFI and the Lighthouse will be playing it, but your local cinema may also be playing it; consult your local cinema’s websites or socials.

Speaking of the IFI, their monthly mystery film will be showing at 1pm on Sunday – the film could be anything from a silent age classic to a brand-spanking new film that hasn’t been seen by anyone else.

The film could be absolutely anything, but chances are it’ll be good.

The Lighthouse’s bi-monthly Stop Making Sense will take place on Saturday night, which we maintain should be prescribed as therapy.

The communal joy of dancing to the music of Talking Heads is one of the great experiences you can have in life.

On Sunday in the Stella, one of the great “TV movies” will be playing (as in a movie you’ve seen a million times on TV but don’t mind because it’s a banger).

In this case, The Fugitive will be playing on Sunday afternoon, and we will never pass up the chance to see Harrison Ford on the big screen.

Mr Ford’s 3rd (and for our money, best) outing as Indiana Jones will be showing at the Stella on Saturday afternoon, with Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade playing.
