Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has said that the “toxic” American President Donald Trump is “not welcome in Dublin.”
The Labour MEP’s comments come in the wake of a planned visit by Trump to the capital in September.
Ó Ríordáin said that “the red carpet should not be rolled out for the US President who has caused chaos in the world and actively sought to undermine the EU.”
He added, “there are multiple reasons why Trump is not welcome in Dublin both for his domestic and international policy agenda, and we should not forget the actions he and his administration have taken to undermine the European Union and international law.”
Ó Ríordáin cited the ongoing war in Iran, the latest American quagmire in the Middle East, which was intended to be a quick military operation and is now only fought on weekends.
“His illegal war against Iran has caused chaos in the world and an energy crisis that is costing Irish people millions in higher prices,” Ó Ríordáin said.
“His unconditional support for Israel’s war and genocide against the Palestinian people has allowed Netanyahu to act with impunity,” he noted.
The Labour MEP also stated that “Trump has sided with autocrats like Putin, and undermined Ukraine.”
“He has threatened the sovereignty of an EU member state with his demand to take over Greenland.
Ó Ríordáin stated, “his administration is directly meddling in European politics and supporting far-right parties.”
“The Trump trade war has caused economic chaos and damaged Irish and EU businesses, while using threats to try and stop the regulation of US multinationals.
“The sanctions the US has deployed against officials in the International Criminal Court are disgraceful and chilling.
“This is just a sample of the outrageous international actions Trump has actioned and inspired through his time in politics, and we should not normalise or tolerate this behaviour.
Ó Ríordáin noted, “his domestic political agenda is just as shocking as we saw with the brutal tactics of ICE against people from a migrant background.”
“Through his political campaigns Trump has deployed racism, homophobia and misogyny, and shown total disregard for the law and democratic norms, and I am proud to have campaigned against him and his toxic politics since 2016.
“In September Ireland must take a stand, and the red carpet should not be rolled out for Trump in Dublin.”
