CATU Tallaght to march on SDCC over Mac Uilliam repairs crisis

The Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) Tallaght Branch will march on South Dublin County Council on Saturday, October 24, as part of the ongoing campaign by tenants in Mac Uilliam, Tallaght, demanding that the Council address the serious and longstanding repairs issues affecting residents.

The march has been organised by tenants and members of CATU as the latest escalation in a campaign that has seen residents repeatedly raise concerns about outstanding repairs and the standard and speed of maintenance works in their homes.

Tenants have made clear that they are not prepared to accept a situation where residents are left waiting for essential repairs while problems in their homes remain unresolved.

The campaign is demanding meaningful action from South Dublin County Council, including the completion of outstanding repairs, proper communication with tenants, transparency around repair requests and work orders, and a clear commitment to addressing the wider maintenance problems identified by residents.

CATU Tallaght believes that tenants should not have to repeatedly organise, complain and campaign simply to secure basic repairs to their homes.

Council housing is not a favour provided to tenants — it is housing that residents are entitled to live in safely and with dignity.

Recent statements from South Dublin County Council regarding the number of completed work orders in Mac Uilliam have also raised questions for tenants about the reality on the ground.

Residents have their own experience of outstanding repairs and unresolved problems, and the campaign will continue to demand transparency about what work has actually been completed and what remains outstanding.

The march on 24 October will send a clear message: tenants are organised, united and prepared to escalate their campaign until their demands are properly addressed.

A spokesperson for CATU Tallaght and Mac Uilliam resident Daniel Comerford said: “The days of tenants quietly waiting while the Council ignores their homes are over.

“Mac Uilliam tenants have organised because they have been left with no other choice, we don’t want to do this we asked South Dublin County Council and Elaine Leech (Director of housing) to sit down and talk to us.

“We are not marching to politely ask for another promise; we are marching to demand action.

“If South Dublin County Council thinks this campaign is going away, they are badly mistaken.

“We will organise, we will mobilise, and we will escalate for as long as it takes to win decent, properly maintained homes for Mac Uilliam tenants.”

CATU Tallaght says it is calling on tenants, workers, trade unionists, community organisations and supporters to join the march and stand with Mac Uilliam residents in their fight for decent, properly maintained homes.
