St Laurence’s BNS students walk for wellness

St Laurence’s Boys National School organised a walk around Clonmore Park as part of their sustainable travel Action Day and Wellness Week.

The walk aimed to promote physical activity, wellbeing, sustainable travel and community involvement. Led by the Green Schools’ Committee, junior students walked 1.8km whilst senior students travelled 2.6km in a loop around the school, staggered from 9am-11am.

Students were escorted by teachers, SNAs and 6th class volunteers as family and community members cheered them on at intervals along the route.

Back at the school, their hard work was rewarded with an ice cream van to celebrate the day.

The event was also attended by principle Damian Moran and Green-Schools Travel Officer, Julianne Pickard.

St Laurence’s BNS has been working on their Global Citizenship Travel flag as part of the An Taisce Green-Schools programme.

Having just been awarded their green flag last week at the Dublin Green-Schools awards, the committee chose to hold their action day to promote the benefits of walking to school.

Alongside promoting sustainable travel, the action day was organised from a global citizenship perspective by supporting the Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

When commenting on the campaign, Green-Schools Coordinator, Odile Connolly said: “It is wonderful to have all of the community involved in our wellness walk. We have had great support from parents and siblings along the route and it was a fantastic culmination of 2 years of work on our GC Travel flag.

“Some of the infants told us it was the best school day ever, especially since they got to wear their own jerseys today!

“Also, a big thanks to all of the teachers, SNAs and 6th class helpers.”
