South Dublin County Council launched its new Economic Strategy 2026–2036 this week, setting out a roadmap to guide economic development across the county over the next decade.
The Strategy was formally launched by the Mayor of South Dublin, Cllr Pamela Kearns, and Peter Byrne, South Dublin Chamber, at an event attended by business leaders, education partners, elected members and key economic stakeholders.
The Economic Strategy sets an ambition to create 1,500 new jobs each year while strengthening South Dublin’s position as one of Ireland’s “most dynamic urban economies.”
“It places a strong emphasis on sustainable, innovation-driven and inclusive growth, ensuring economic progress delivers opportunity for all,” the council said.
Speaking at the launch, Mayor of South Dublin, Cllr Pamela Kearns, said:
“This Strategy sets out a bold, confident and inclusive vision for South Dublin’s future. It recognises our strong starting position, with an economy already worth over €22 billion, and provides a clear framework to grow that value to more than €28 billion over the next decade through smart, resilient and sustainable development.”
She added:
“Our greatest strengths are our people, our economic base and our connectivity. This Strategy builds on those strengths while looking forward to new opportunities in fast-growth sectors such as creative and media, food and drink, and technology — sectors that enhance not just economic value, but quality of life and innovation across South Dublin.”
The Strategy is structured around four interconnected pillars – Sectors, Space, People and Place, and takes a coordinated, place-based approach to economic development, particularly in the context of major regeneration projects in Tallaght and City Edge.
The Economic Strategy has been shaped through extensive engagement with business leaders, education providers, state agencies and community stakeholders, and will be delivered through “ongoing partnership, targeted investment and strong governance.”
South Dublin County Council acknowledged the contribution of OCO Global in preparing the Strategy, along with the input of the Council’s elected members, senior management and Economic Development team.
