Ciara Hickey of local club Brothers Pearse AC yesterday took the women’s title at the Tallaght 5 Mile, which kick started the Irish Life Dublin Race Series.

Over 2,000 runners took part on the day.

Hickey’s victory on home soil was never in doubt.

She came home in 27:35, almost two minutes clear of DSD’s Sarah Mulligan (29:14) with Crusader’s Yvonne Mac Auley third in 30:27.

Hickey revealed that she does most of her training on a treadmill because of her busy life as an accountant and a mother of two:

“I am working from home since lockdown, so it has helped me to be able to get in more training.

“Delighted to win because it is my local race and there was a big gang from the club out here running today.

“The atmosphere was great, they (the organisers) really put on a great show.”

A brilliant sprint finish saw Mayo man Hugh Armstrong (pictured above) (Ballina AC) just hold off Dunboyne AC’s Peter Somba.

Local clubman Tomas Fitzpatrick (Tallaght AC) took third in 26:31:

“This was actually my first road race since 2019 and it’s just brilliant to make the podium, especially here in Tallaght.

“When I saw this race and where it was being held, I was delighted.

“So great just to get out and run with other people. I bumped into lots of people I knew beforehand, and everyone was saying exactly the same.

“Everyone’s missed being out racing together so it’s just great to be back.”
