TWO new play spaces have been officially opened by South Dublin County Council.
The Mayor of the council, Cllr Vicky Casserly, cut the red tape on the new play space at Waterstown Park, Palmerstown, on Wednesday, September 4.
The project was funded by South Dublin County Council through the ‘300K have your say’ Public Participatory Budget.
Various local projects were chosen and voted on by the communities of Lucan and Palmerstown for funding under the programme.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Cllr Vicky Casserly said: “The new playground incorporates natural play, which has been proven to have benefits for children in terms of increasing well-being, developing imagination and allowing them to assess risk and develop their coping abilities.
“In addition, the playground was designed and audited to ensure access is possible for children of all types of abilities and an accessible picnic table has been installed on request following the audit.”
The Mayor went on to pay tribute to the local community for their support of the popular playground.
She also praised the work of the council staff in facilitating the consultation with the local communities, for managing the project and for maintaining the play space.
The following week, the Mayor was in Templeogue where she officially opened the new play space there, at Glendown Park.
Speaking at this event the Mayor added: “Play spaces contribute to better physical and mental health for children and have also taken on a significance in terms of becoming focal points and meeting places for local communities.
“In Glendown it is wonderful to see so many groups of young people using the equipment before and after school and at weekends; and seeing the social interaction of parents, grandparents and groups of neighbours.”
The Mayor also paid tribute to this local community for their support in both the development of the playground and their continued support of a valuable facility.
