A YOUNG Southside student, Keelan James Daye, is currently in Korea where his decoding skills are being put to the test at the International Linguistics Olympiad.
The Sandford Park School student is one of four secondary school students from across Ireland who were selected to test language decoding skills against the world’s best.
He beat competition from an initial national line up of 4000 students who competed in the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO), a competition run by the ADAPT Centre, a world-leading SFI research centre.
ADAPT runs the competition annually which challenges secondary school students to apply logic and reasoning skills to solve complex puzzles in unfamiliar languages.
Keelan said the event was an unparalleled opportunity to challenge to explore linguistics and meet new friends along the way.
“I am so honoured to be representing Ireland this year in South Korea,” he said.
Joining Keelan on the team are Laura Cosgrave from Cork, Flynn Ryan from Rathmore Grammar School, Belfast and Páidí Walsh from Ballybay.
