DÚN Laoghaire Rathdown councillors have declared a Biodiversity and Climate Change Emergency.
At a council meeting last week, the local authority also approved a Climate Change Action Plan which sets out a series of targets aimed at adapting to and mitigating against climate change.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr Ossian Smyth, said that climate change is the biggest global challenge of this century.
“In publishing our Climate Change Action Plan and declaring this emergency, we have signalled our intention to show leadership and ambition as we seek to preserve the world as we know it for generations to come,” Cllr Smyth said in a statement.
Dún Laoaghire-Rathdown County Council has committed a further €150,000 in the 2019 budget to support their action plan, which focuses on five key areas: energy and buildings, transport, flood resilience, nature-based solutions and resource management.
It aims to improve energy efficiency in council buildings; facilitate the transition to more sustainable modes of transport; protect infrastructure; safeguard our natural heritage; and improve resource efficiency. The council intends to influence emissions in the wider county through leading by example and working with communities, businesses and national government.
