Medal awards for Tallaght patients

SIX patients at Tallaght Hospital have been awarded with special medals-of-achievement in recognition of their courage and perseverance in living with diabetes.

The six recipients, who are all in their 70s, have collectively lived with Type 1 Diabetes for 320 years.

Pictured above are Sheila Devlin (60), Maire Stone (60), Florence Farrell (50) and Stephen Curran (also 50) with Karen Townsend, diabetes nurse; Prof Richard Firth, Dr James Gibney and Dr Lucy-Ann Behan, Consultant Endocrinologists at Tallaght University Hospital.

The four women and two men who have been attending the Diabetes outpatients clinic at the hospital, each received either an Alan Nabarro medal or a Robert Lawrence medal.

Commenting at the presentation Professor Firth said: “Living with diabetes for over 50 years is remarkable. It says more about the self-discipline and compliance of the individual patient than about the improving care available.”
