TWO selfless Southsiders have been awarded for their selfless dedication to their local communities.
Una Moore and Caroline McDermott were singled out for praise in the dlr Celebration of Volunteerism 2017 that was hosted by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
Over 50 individuals were nominated by their community for their work with community based organisations.
Awards made across various categories and the event provided an opportunity both to recognise and celebrate the selfless contributions of dlr’s volunteers.
The Outstanding Group Award was given to Kilcross Estate Management Forum and Kilcross Residents and Development Group who work together for the good of all the community, striving to deliver a healthy, friendly, caring community that residents are happy and proud to live in.
Together, they run the Resource Centre, providing a welcome for everyone, a cup of tea and a chat.
Among the awards given was An Cathaoirleach’s Award for Long Service.
This was awarded to Professor PJ Drudy who has been a volunteer with the Parents, Family and Friends of Carmona Services for over forty years.
He has helped raise significant funding and supported the organisation with providing essential facilities and services.
The Award for Long Service was also provided to Una Moore who has been volunteering with Loughlinstown/Ballybrack Meals on Wheels for 27 years.
She is the lynch-pin between Loughlinstown Hospital, where the meals are cooked, and the HSE Community Team working to ensure that people in the area receive a hot meal six days a week.
Caroline McDermott was also awarded for volunteering for over 40 years with several groups in her local community, which includes Shanganagh Park House Summer Project, Rathsallagh/ Shanganagh/Clifton Estate Management and Recycled Teenagers.
The event celebrated the spirit of volunteerism that is demonstrated all year round by individuals who give their time to improve the quality of life for citizens in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County.
The event also marked the tenth birthday of the dlr Volunteer Centre and the launch of the dlr Volunteer Corp, which is a joint initiative of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the locally-based dlr Volunteer Centre.
