Major funding boost for local animal groups

Minister Zappone is a big supporter of events like the Bark in the Park.

LOCAL animal welfare groups will receive more than €500,000 in funding to support their work in communities, it has been revealed.

Dublin South West TD and Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone, said the money will be used to fund animal rescue and support work – including free or reduced cost services for people to protect their pets.

The Minister said she was particularly pleased that both the DSCPCA and the Irish Blue Cross, which are well-known and respected in Rathfarnham, Tallaght and Citywest have received vital funding for their services.

Minister Zapppone said: “I share the passion and love of animals which people of all ages have across the Southside.

“Pets, big and small, are providing loyal company and friendship which is boosting the health and well-being of their owners.

“However, we must also be aware that some animals do, for a variety of reasons end up being abandoned, uncared for and left in danger.

“In other homes the burden of caring for a beloved pet in terms of care and vaccines can be too much.

“On such occasions the dedicated and skilled workers and volunteers of our animal welfare charities provide invaluable support.”

Minister Zappone added: “I welcome the confirmation that the Government is going to continue to support this work with major funding.”

Organisations receiving funding include: DSPCA, Mount Venus Road, Rathfarnham, €375,000; The Irish Blue Cross, 15a Goldenbridge Industrial Estate, Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, €180,000; My Lovely Horse Rescue, 44 Main Street, Rathfarnham, €12,000; and Clondalkin Animal Aid Ltd, 91 Boot Road, Clondalkin,  €6,000

“This funding through the Department of Agriculture and Minister Michael Creed is particularly welcome as it comes when many of the groups involved are facing their busiest time of the year,” the minister added.
