Dalkey man scores a GOAL for charity

FOLLOWING a trip to Ethiopia in April of this year, Dalkey local Sean Cassidy organised a fundraising golf event for GOAL.

Sean was inspired to organise the event after witnessing first-hand some of the challenges faced by those living in vulnerable circumstances in Ethiopia, particularly the young children forced to live on the streets of the capital, Addis Ababa.

On his return, and while telling a few of his friends about what he saw, they decided to try and do something – and the idea of a golf event was born.

Sean then contacted GOAL, who told him about their programme to support children living on the streets of Addis, and in another city, Hawassa.

Sean and his team then contacted local businesses to enter teams, sponsor holes and donate prizes.

The golf event was held at Druid’s Heath in September and raised over €7,000.

A cheque presentation then took place at GOAL’s offices.

GOAL’s National Campaigns Manager, Alan Vard, said: “Sean went to a lot of effort organising this event, and we are very grateful that he did so.

“He witnessed for himself just some of the poverty that exists for young children in places like Addis Ababa and was inspired to try do something about it.

“The event was extremely well-run, was thoroughly enjoyable and most of all, raised more than €7,000 for GOAL’s work.

“A big thank you to all those involved in this event from everyone here in GOAL.”
