THE former Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr Guss O’Connell presented a plaque to Tallaght Choral Society to mark their 50th anniversary recently.
Formed in 1967, Tallaght Choral Society began as a modest church choir based in the Dominican Priory, originally under the direction of founder Fr Donal Sweeney.
Through a succession of musical directors, the choir began to tackle more challenging pieces, with their first performance of Handel’s Messiah occurring in 1971.
Today they are a unit over 100 strong who all work tirelessly to deliver their performances as they earn the  opportunities to collaborate with many prolific composers, orchestras and choirs.Â
At the reception, Tallaght Choral Society treated attendees to some pieces from their choral repertoire.
One such piece
‘All in the April Evening’ makes use of words by local poet and novelist Katharine Tynan.
Attendees commented on the strength and beauty of the piece which was further enhanced by the quality of the acoustics in the council chamber.
Presenting AidÃn O’Sullivan, Honorary Chairperson of Tallaght Choral Society, with an engraved piece from Dublin Crystal, the former Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Guss O’Connell stated:
“I would like to congratulate Tallaght Choral Society on their 50th anniversary.
“From small beginnings, the choir, along with their musical directors, have worked extremely hard over the years to cultivate a strong choral repertoire.
“This passion and enthusiasm for choral singing is also shared by the hardworking chairpersons and committee members of the society.
“South Dublin County Council is honoured to be able to support the Tallaght Choral Society.
“And we compliment them on their community building achievements which have been in tandem with the development of Tallaght itself into a thriving metropolis and county town.
